About Milan, OH - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Milan, Ohio was established in 1817 on the site of an abandoned Moravian Indian mission. At first, it went by the name of Beatty but was incorporated in 1833 under its present name. During its early years it was the site of a gristmill and sawmill, but when the Milan Canal opened in 1839 it soon became a bustling lake port. All port activity came to an end when the dam ceased to operate in 1868, at which point Milan's economy became primarily agricultural. Today the town sees a certain amount of tourist trade due to its historical significance as the birthplace of Thomas Edison. The Edison Birthplace Museum features a large collection of Edison memorabilia including some of his earliest inventions, and the nearby Milan Museum has seven buildings of exhibits dedicated to local history. Milan is known for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture, and several historical homes make up part of the museum campus.
Milan's premier annual event, the Milan Melon Festival, has been taking place each Labor Day weekend for over 50 years. The festival, which is held in Edison Park, pays tribute to one of the major local crops and is famous for serving up cantaloupe ice cream and watermelon sherbet. Milan's weather stays mild and pleasant from spring all the way through fall when residents enjoy the annual Pumpkin Palooza harvest festival put on by the Milan Museum. When the mercury plummets in December, the Milan museum hosts indoor activities instead, including an annual gingerbread house-making workshop at the Doll and Toy House and General Store.
