The city of  Bellevue spans four Ohio counties: Erie, Huron, Sandusky and Seneca. It was established in 1815, and in its earlier days was known as a railroad hub. Henry Morrison Flagler, who partnered with John D. Rockefeller to found the Standard Oil Company, lived in Bellevue before relocating to Key West to launch the Florida Overseas Railroad.  His former residence now houses the Mad River and NKP Railroad Museum, which showcases the history of both the Mad River & Lake Erie Railroad, which ran through Bellevue in 1839, and the Nickel Plate Road, which served the town from 1882 until 1964 until merging with the Norfolk & Western Railway.

Bellevue's other local attractions include the 1846 Tremont House, listed on the National Register of Historical Places and now owned by the Bellevue Historical Society, Seneca Caverns, which is one of the largest underground caverns in the world, and the Sorrowful Mother Shrine, which is the Midwest's oldest shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Historic Lyme Village, which depicts life in Firelands Ohio from the early 1800s through the early 1900s, hosts an annual Pioneer Days celebration in September which features old-time crafts, music, hands-on activities and historical reenactors. Bellevue also hosts a Community Days festival each June. Even though Bellevue's warm summer and fall temperatures give way to freezing winters, hardy Ohioans still brave the outdoor chill each December to attend or participate in the town's annual Christmas parade. Those who prefer to stay indoors, however, can attend one of Lyme Village’s candlelit Victorian Christmas dinners to celebrate the holiday with music, storytelling and yummy 19th-century treats.
